To Paulina, Luciana and Antonio
Long ago, in a kingdom far away, there was a Princess who did not believe in love or in stories about love. All the people of this kingdom talked about this feeling, but she did not consider it more than anything else known, almost as an object, as they were for her the desert and the penguins, since she had never seen any of these three things in her life. The only difference she found between these things was that at least she had seen the desert and the penguins on paintings and yet had never seen a portrait of love.
This Princess frequently liked to escape from her castle. She liked to go to a nearby lake and throw rocks toward the center of it; she liked seeing the growing concentric rings on the surface of the water. She also liked to collect strawberries on the surrounding bushes and crush them with her hands until they mash.
Once, in one of her many escapes from the castle, she found on the shores of the lake a lizard fleeing from a cat. The cat had the reptile in its claws, ready to eat it, but just before the sharp teeth would crush the poor lizard, the Princess forcefully threw a stone that hit the cat's head, a move that was followed by a kick in the stomach to the same animal, the lizard went flying through the air up into the hands of the Princess, the cat ran extremely hurt away from that place as if was the end of the world. The Princess did not know why she rescued this lizard, she had it in her hands now and it was smiling back to her. The Princess gave him a kiss and she let it go away.
Who would have thought that the first kiss of the Princess who didn’t believe in love would be to a poor lizard?
Many years passed, the Princess continued to grow without knowing or believing in love.
She was without any doubt the most beautiful woman that no nearby kingdom has ever seen. Her fame was also growing, not only for its beauty but for its enchanting songs, as every night she sang from the balcony of her room, located in the tallest tower of the castle, making splendid even the darkest night; her songs were even more beautiful than those chanted by sirens. The sailors left to be guided by their compass, stars or lights; they could be guided only by the sweet charming notes coming from that tower. Every night she sang you could see shooting stars in the sky, as these seemed, on their vast distance, that they could hear the beautiful songs and they had no more choice but to fly to the Princess and fade into the sky at the incredible beauty of her notes. It also seemed that, every night she sang, the same universe revolved around the Princess who did not believe in love.
Every day hundreds of people formed outside the high tower where she lived for a chance to woo her. She gladly accepted the challenge every day, allowing visits and seeing as many people the day would allow, with the hope that on at least one of them she might find this concept called love. In the waiting line you could found from the humblest person in the kingdom to the handsomest prince of the surrounding kingdoms. The Princess always offered equal opportunities, but the result was always the same: deception.
- How can you say being in love with me if you do not even know what my favorite color is? You don’t even know if I prefer tulips, roses or calla lilies. You don’t know if I prefer to see a sunrise or a sunset. You don’t know which song or poem makes my heart race; you don’t even know if I prefer a plate of rice or beans.
Her fame continued to grow until the King of the Black Armor heard about her. He was the most vicious and bloody king that the whole continent had seen in his entire history. This king had three wives and twenty children in total; he had abandoned all of them at some point of his life. After hearing of the fame of that Princess, to which even the stars disintegrated themselves after hearing her beautiful songs, he did not hesitate even for a moment to mobilize all his troops to conquer the Princess’ kingdom. He did it without any problem, since his army was larger and powerful than any other.
When the King of the Black Armor made his triumphal entrance to the castle of the Princess kingdom's he found that she had completely sealed the tower where she lived.
The King of the Black Armor, angry with the Princess, threatened to torture her parents if she did not open the doors of the tower, where she was isolated, and act as his new wife. The Princess didn’t open the door and the King of the Black Armor began whipping her parents outside of that tower. The Princess, heartbroken to see her parents tortured, still would not be deterred by the persuasions of that king. But this king was impatient and intolerant; he soon changed his strategy and threatened that if the Princess did not accept to open the doors of the tower he would proceed to set fire to it.
The Princess would rather die in the flames than fall into the hands of that disheartened being. The King of the Black Armor gave her a day to change her mind, but the Princess never opened the doors. Then he ordered his knights to set fire to the tower.
The Princess felt that her skin began to harden before the waves of fire began to spread to the terrace on top of her tower; a smoke layer began to take over the horizon. It seemed that her minutes were numbered in this life. Smoke and heat increased every moment. In the distance of the vague horizon any could barely recognize, despite the smoke that traveled across the tower, she began to hear and feel the movements of a giant pair of wings coming towards the tower where she was. On the moment she least imagined she was caught in by a giant claw that extracted her from the burning tower, which minutes later was completely destroyed by the fire.
The Princess thought then that maybe it was an angel or a demon who had taken her away from that place, perhaps she was already dead, but when she opened her eyes she immediately recognized the smile across the giant claws, on which she was now lying. It was the same lizard that one day was saved by her from the shores of the lake. The reptile that could have been killed by a cat had become a mighty dragon. She was now the one among huge hands, she was now the one who had been saved. The dragon after recognizing her smile kissed her. The two got immediately interconnected. The dragon was the closest she had ever been to love.
-We must rescue my parents. –She said quickly.
The dragon masterfully flew over the castle, invaded now by the King of the Black Armor, it moved with speed to the location on which the Princess’ parents were tied. He graved them with one of his claws and then with his mouth spitted enough fire to wipe out half the King of the Black Armor’s army.
That lost reign did not matter anymore for the Princess’ parents, the most important thing was that they were alive.
The dragon flew and flew, escaping from that reign lost.
The Princess left her parents in a village not far from the kingdom where they belonged, as people still recognize them and treated them with respect.
Meanwhile she decided to continue flying above her dragon to new continents. She said goodbye to her parents and promised to return to them once she finally founded this thing called love.
The Princess continued in her quest to find love, traveling for many years in different continents and horizons. After a couple of trips she finally found it, not once but many times, but she also found disappointment. She was happy some days, but she was also sad many others. She learned then that love is not a simple thing, that love is not a mathematical formula, much less an object, and very different from penguins or the desert. But she learned and she fell in love with life, she fell in love to fell in love, even to fell in love of the very moment of riding her dragon in search for love.
The Princess who did not believe in love stories became the greatest promoter of love. She discovered that love doesn’t knock on your door even if you're the greatest, most beautiful and most talented Princess of an entire continent. Love is pursuing, love is not being afraid to make mistakes, love is accepting that one can make mistakes, but without being afraid to make any mistakes.
It is said that whenever you can see shooting stars in the sky is because the Princess is singing near the horizon, riding her impetuous dragon in the pursuit of a new adventure that would take her to a new love, the stars are not to blame because only by hearing her sweet voice, now more full of love than ever before, these have no choice but to fade to her charm.
